My name is Anthony G. Maes. I am a Roman Catholic priest with the
Norbertine Fathers of DePere, Wisconsin. Our order has established a
priory here in Albuquerque where I live with 13 other men of our order.
I enjoy life as a Norbertine Priest. It gives me the opportunity to
live a deeply spiritual life with a community of brothers living a
common life. We pray the morning and evening liturgy of the hours as
it is prescribed by the Church and is given a distinctly ancient
character reflective of the Norbertine Order.
I work at the only Catholic High School in Albuquerque. I serve as
Chaplain for St. Pius X High School. It is a very fulfilling ministry
and I am so happy to be part of this school community. I hope to serve
here for many more years and to be instrumental in the formation of as
many young souls as God will direct my way.
I also serve in one of the two parishes we have here in Albuquerque.
I usually minister to the Spanish speaking community with the Spanish
Masses and a variety of other gatherings. It is a distinctly unique
and joy-filled ministry to be from New Mexico and to serve the people
of the area called the Southwest Valley. It is also a joyful
experience to be a priest within the context of the Norbertine charism
and tradition.
I am a native New Mexican, born in Albuquerque in 1955. I have lived in
Albuquerque most of my life and hopefully will live here for the rest
of my life. My sense of heritage and history is rooted in this
wonderful south-western state. My earliest ancestor came to New Mexico
with the expedition of Francisco Coronado in 1540. This individual
named Capitan Pedro Varela de Jaramillo was a captain in the expedition
which would end in Coronado’s death on their return to the Viceroyalty
of Mexico.
Many of my ancestors have been here since the settlement of the
territory in the late 1600ʼs. We have made our living mostly by
ranching and farming. Sadly the last of the ranchers is my uncle who
is in his late nineties and is no longer able to continue ranching.
Hopefully, it will be used wisely as it passes on to family members.
Both my mother Maria and my father Enriquez were at Willard, New Mexico.
Dad passed away from a long struggle with heart disease in 1998. I hold his
memory close to my heart and he is only a prayer away when I need him.
Mom lives in the family home here in Albuquerque and spends much of
her time in service to her parish community. She is a wonderful
example of a person who goes beyond herself to tend to the elderly and
their spiritual needs.
I have two brothers; one younger, Adrian and one older, Frank. They each have two
children. My older brother has a son and a daughter and they each have
two children. My younger brother has two daughters. The elder
daughter is married with a new baby boy. I take great joy in my family
and am proud to be an uncle and a great-uncle to the newer additions.
It is a joyful experience to have both blessings of family and the Norbertine Community.
